What Is Better An Antivirus Or Antimalware?

What Is Better An Antivirus Or Antimalware?

Surely you have ever wondered what is the difference between an antivirus and an antimalware, since it is very common to confuse both terms. In order to understand this aspect and discover if an antivirus or antimalware is better, we first have to define the concepts of viruses and malware, so let's start at the beginning.  A virus is a program capable of replicating itself and its main function is to enter a computer and damage its entire operating system. For its part, malware is a more general term that, in addition to encompassing viruses, also includes other types of malicious software, such as Trojans or worms, whose purpose is not only to damage but also to access your computer to rob you sensitive information or take control of some of its functions. Once this is clarified, we are going to see what is an antivirus and an antimalware.

What is an antivirus? And an antimalware?

An antivirus is a program that protects computers from most viruses that can access and damage a computer system. Some of the problems that a virus can cause to enter your computer are, just to mention a few:

  • Deletion of files.
  • Data alteration.
  • Uninstalling the operating system.

Antivirus monitors the state of the computer in real time and, in case of detecting something strange; they set off the alarm that will tell you that your computer is being attacked so that you can solve it in time. For the antivirus to work it is important that it is up-to-date, as currently crackers create very sophisticated viruses. Since there are some antivirus whose updates are automatic, it is advisable to leave this option enabled if it is available.

Antimalware, on the other hand, is a program of the same style and with the same operation, but instead of solving older problems related to the entry of external attacks, it solves newer ones. Therefore, although they are very specific, there are differences between antivirus and antimalware.

Difference between antivirus and antimalware

One of the main differences between antivirus and antimalware is what each of them fix. The former are very effective for, as their name suggests, traditional viruses, whether they reach our computer electronically, such as attached to an email; or through a traditional source used to share data, such as a USB.

Antimalware, on the other hand, is ideal for more advanced and less predictable attacks, such as Trojans, worms or spyware, among others. These are very effective for all those threats that are spread through the network and whose purpose is not only to destroy, but also to obtain something from your company.

So what is better an antivirus or antimalware? Our recommendation is that you combine both programs on the same computer. You do not have to worry about the performance of your computer, since antimalware is very light and is designed to share space with antivirus. If you want to implement these protection systems and improve the security of your company, contact us.
